The Basics of Skin Care
Your skin works hard for you every day. It protects you from the outside world, helps maintain moisture and renews itself constantly. A little thoughtful care can help it do its job.
At The Little Indy Soap Shop, I like to keep skincare simple. Think of it as four little steps, each with its own purpose. You don't necessarily need everything — the trick is understanding what your skin needs.
1. CLEANSE
A fresh start.
Cleansing removes the day's build-up of dirt, excess oil, sweat and cosmetics, leaving your skin feeling fresh and ready for the next step. Gentle exfoliation, when needed, can help remove surface dead skin cells and smooth the skin.
2. HYDRATE
Give your skin a drink.
Water-based products such as toners and serums help replenish moisture in the outer layers of the skin, leaving it feeling comfortable, fresh and supple.
3. MOISTURISE
Keep the goodness in.
Moisturisers help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss. Depending on the formulation, they can combine water-loving ingredients with oils and other ingredients that help keep the skin comfortable and smooth.
4. PROTECT & REPAIR
A little extra care.
Oil-rich balms and other protective products help support the skin's natural barrier and reduce moisture loss. They can be particularly useful when skin feels dry, mature or exposed to cold, wind and other harsh conditions.
Does our skin need more as we get older?
Not necessarily more products, but sometimes a little more support.
Younger skin may be perfectly happy with gentle cleansing and moisturising. As we get older, skin can become drier or less resilient, and a hydrating serum or nourishing balm may become a welcome addition.
There is no magic birthday when your routine needs to change. Let your skin guide you.
Make the most of your skincare
Start with clean skin. Applying your products after cleansing helps remove the surface build-up that can interfere with their application.
Warm it between your hands. Gently spreading a product between your palms makes it easier to apply evenly. Follow with a light, comfortable massage rather than pulling or stretching the skin.
Use a little at a time. More product does not necessarily mean better results. Give each formulation a chance to settle before applying the next.
Be consistent, not complicated. A simple routine that you enjoy and use regularly is often more practical than a shelf full of products.
Remember the bigger picture. Skincare can support the skin, but it cannot replace the basics: a varied diet, enough sleep, good daily habits and protection from excessive sun exposure.
Above all, take a moment for yourself. Skincare need not be another chore on your list. It can be a small, enjoyable ritual in your day.
Thank you for trusting me to be part of yours.
